How do I transfer my Unchained IRA to another IRA provider?
Start by initiating the request at your receiving custodian.
You can transfer your Unchained IRA to another IRA provider at any time. The transfer request must be initiated with your receiving custodian, not Unchained.
You can transfer your IRA in USD or, if supported by your receiving custodian, bitcoin in-kind.
Fortis Bank custodian information
On your transfer paperwork, designate Fortis Bank as the sending IRA custodian, not Unchained.
If your receiving custodian uses an electronic form or dropdown menu and Fortis Bank is not listed, select FORTIS PRIVATE BANK. Do not select FORTIS CAPITAL, as this is a separate entity.

How to transfer your Unchained IRA
Note: These steps are generalized and only to be used as a reference. Follow the specific instructions provided by your receiving custodian and email ira@unchained.com if you have any questions about your outbound transfer.
Transfer your IRA in USD
- Complete your receiving custodian’s IRA transfer paperwork. Designate Fortis Bank as the sending IRA custodian. If an electronic form or dropdown does not list Fortis Bank, select FORTIS PRIVATE BANK.
- Make sure you have enough USD in your IRA cash balance. If needed, sell bitcoin within your Unchained IRA to increase your IRA cash balance. IRA trading fees apply.
- Your receiving custodian submits the transfer request to Fortis Bank.
- Fax & Email are the recommended and fastest submission method (Fortis Bank does not support outbound ACATS transfers).
- Requests sent by mail can take approximately 7–10 business days to reach Fortis Bank.
- Once received, Fortis will process the transfer after completing any required verification with you.
For a full USD IRA transfer, your IRA assets must be fully converted to USD and available in your IRA cash balance before Fortis can process the transfer.
Transfer bitcoin in-kind
If your receiving IRA custodian supports in-kind bitcoin transfers, you may be able to transfer your bitcoin without selling it to USD.
- Initiate the transfer with your receiving custodian. Confirm that they support incoming in-kind bitcoin IRA transfers.
- Your receiving custodian provides or confirms the bitcoin deposit address via email. Unchained will work with you, Fortis, and your receiving custodian to coordinate the BTC transfer.
- Send a small test deposit.
- We recommend completing a small test transaction before transferring the remaining bitcoin. Wait for confirmation that your receiving custodian received the test deposit before continuing.
- Send the remaining bitcoin.
- Once the test deposit is confirmed, you can transfer the remaining bitcoin from your Unchained IRA vault.
Unchained will guide you through the in-kind transfer process via email and provide instructions as the transfer progresses.
Full IRA transfers
If you are transferring your entire IRA, additional account-closure steps may be required after your assets have been transferred.
Unchained and Fortis will provide instructions for completing the remaining account-closure steps.
