How do I set up a Trezor Safe 5?

Use the Trezor Suite desktop program to securely generate an offline bitcoin key.

Setting up your Trezor will only take a few minutes. Please follow our video guide to set up the Trezor properly, according to best practices!

What you'll need

  • Your Trezor hardware wallet with its USB cord
  • A PC or Mac with a USB-C port to connect your Trezor
  • A pen to write down your seed phrase
  • A blank wallet backup card, as provided in the Trezor box

Tip: If you are setting up a Trezor to create an Unchained vault for the first time, you can find these steps and others within our Self-Service Onboarding guide.

Here is a written summary of the steps:

  1. Download and install the Trezor Suite on your computer.
  2. Open the Suite program and plug in your Trezor.
  3. Select Set up my Trezor and download the firmware onto your Trezor (bitcoin-only firmware is recommended but not required).
  4. Click Start to perform the authentication check on the "Let's check your device" page.
  5. Tap on the Trezor to begin the navigation tutorial.
  6. Click Create New Wallet and ensure that you select the Legacy backup type with 12 words.
    • Do not choose the 20-word "Single-share Backup" or the "Multi-share Backup" options.
  7. Confirm this selection on your Trezor, confirm the backup best practices, and then Begin backup.
  8. Your Trezor will generate the 12 seed words and display them on its small screen.
  9. Write down your seed phrase into your wallet backup card. You must write them down in order and spell each word correctly. The words are not case-sensitive. Never make a digital copy of these words or take a photo of them.
  10. Complete a short multiple-choice quiz on your seed words to confirm that you wrote them down correctly.
  11. Set a PIN code of your choice for your Trezor. Write the PIN on your wallet backup card.
  12. On the "Active Coins" screen, scroll to the bottom and select Complete Setup.
  13. Setting a device name is optional. If you name your Trezor, write the name on your wallet backup card. When ready, select Access Suite.

You're done! It is safe to unplug your Trezor at any time. Repeat these steps for a second Trezor if you want to use another one for your Unchained Vault.

Caution: Losing your hardware wallet or seed phrase backup could compromise this key and put your bitcoin at risk. Follow our security best practices to store your key safely.

You may now add the Trezor key to your Unchained account. Or, if you have chosen to set up your Trezors before a Concierge Onboarding, this is a great point to stop and wait for your onboarding call.
