How long do IRA-to-IRA transfers take?

IRA transfers are dependent on your custodian and how quickly they process your request. Most IRA transfers take about one week.

You can start an IRA-to-IRA transfer once you establish your Unchained IRA. You do not need to create a vault to start funding. Most transfers take about one week, but this timeline is dependent on several factors including:

  • How quickly your custodian processes the request
  • Whether the request was filled out correctly or not
  • If your custodian sends funds via wire transfer or paper check
  • If there are any delays in the mail system if a check is sent
  • How quickly Fortis Bank processes the check

Regarding the status of your IRA transfer, please follow up with your current custodian:

  1. Have you contacted your custodian directly to confirm the current status of your IRA Transfer Request?
  2. Have your IRA funds officially left your IRA account with your current custodian?
  3. How were the funds sent by your custodian (check/ wire)?
  4. If possible, please ask your custodian to expedite the IRA Rollover request.
