Why does my vault have a Legacy indication?

Important: Segwit vaults are currently only available to Unchained Signature clients, who can unlock products and features before the official release. Other Unchained clients can create segwit vaults after the official release. If you are already a Signature client, contact us to enable segwit on your account.

Legacy describes a type of multisig vault. If you have a legacy vault, that's fine! Legacy vaults are secure, and will continue to be supported by Unchained. You don't need to take any action.

However, legacy vaults don't use segwit, which is an upgrade to bitcoin that helps users save on transaction fees over time. You can learn more about segwit in our article.

Should I change from a legacy vault to a newer vault?

This depends on how often you use your vault to send and receive bitcoin.

If you use your vault to protect a large amount of bitcoin for the long term and you seldom perform transactions, upgrading to a newer vault that uses segwit won't benefit you much. You can consider keeping your vault the way it is.

If you regularly add bitcoin to your vault (especially in smaller amounts, such as below 0.03 BTC), you could save substantial transaction fees over time by upgrading to segwit. You can use our guide to upgrade, which is as easy as building a new vault with the same keys and moving your bitcoin to it.
