Use your Ledger to securely generate an offline bitcoin key.
What you'll need
- Your Ledger hardware wallet with its USB cord
- A PC or Mac with a USB-C port to connect your hardware wallet
- A pen to write down your seed phrase
- A blank wallet recovery sheet, as provided in the Ledger box
Tip: The Ledger Flex and Stax use the same interface, so the steps are identical. If you have a Ledger Nano S or X, follow our separate guide: How do I set up a Ledger Nano S or X?

Here is a written summary of the steps:
- Use the side button to turn on the Ledger and tap the screen to continue.
- The Ledger will provide some educational information about the importance of private keys. Tap to continue.
- To review Unchained's recommended security steps, visit our Knowledge Base article How should I secure my keys and seed phrases?
- Choose Set up without Ledger Live, then Skip Ledger Live.
- Name your Ledger and tap to continue. Write this name on your seed phrase recovery sheet that came with your Ledger.
- Tap Choose my PIN to set a 4-8-digit PIN code. Write the PIN on your recovery sheet.
- Choose Set up as a new Ledger. Read the disclaimers and tap to continue.
- Tap I understand. The Ledger will generate a random sequence of 24 words, shown four at a time.
- Write down your seed phrase into your recovery sheet. You must write them down in order and spell each word correctly. The words are not case-sensitive. Never make a digital copy of these words or take a photo of them.
- Click Start confirmation and start a quiz to verify that you wrote down the words correctly.
- Download and install Ledger Live on your computer.
- Open the Live program and plug in your Ledger.
- Navigate to My Ledger and Allow a secure connection with your Ledger.
- Locate the Bitcoin (BTC) app in the App catalog and click Install.
You're done! It is safe to unplug your Ledger at any time. Repeat these steps for a second Ledger if you plan to use another one for your Unchained Vault.
Caution: Losing your hardware wallet or seed phrase backup could compromise this key and put your bitcoin at risk. Follow our security best practices to store your key safely.
You may now add the Ledger key to your Unchained account. If you have chosen to set up your Ledgers before a Concierge Onboarding, this is a great point to stop and wait for your onboarding call.
